Travel Transformational - What To Do With Time That Is Given To Us

Travel Transformational - What To Do With Time That Is Given To Us

This month debuts our Travel Transformational. Inspired by "Harry Potter and the Sacred Text" podcast, we'll be looking at quotes, passages, and books from across all genres. Through this process, we'll explore the context, how the quote relates to the world around us, how it relates to our lives, and what action it compels us to take.

Today’s quote comes from the movie adaption of The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien.

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
-Gandalf

Gandalf is perhaps one of the wisest and well-known characters from Middle Earth. His guidance gets those in his charge into trouble, but they also experience profound transformation. In this simple sentence, Gandalf reminds Frodo that despite the evil growing in Mordor, Frodo should focus on his mission to destroy the ring.

While Gandalf is speaking to Frodo about Sauron, the ring, the ring wraiths, and facing pure evil, Gandalf’s words resonate in today’s world. This Gandalf-ism reminds us there are circumstances and situations in this world beyond our control. No matter how much we share, like, tweet, vote, or spend money, people get hurt, dictators come into power, people experience famine, war, and disease.

Let’s look read it again:
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

There are so many facets of our lives that are out of our control. The economy, the climate, terror attacks, our jobs, driving, flight delays and cancellations - no matter how much we plan, confirm, verify, and have backups, at a certain point, we have to let go. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. We don’t need to decide much, but we do need to decide our purpose.

My friend is currently soul-searching as it relates to her career. She feels her passions align with a role that doesn’t currently exist at her company. She’s concerned she doesn’t fit within a certain mold. I think this quote fits well for anyone in a situation where they feel they don’t fit - all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you. You don’t have to fit any mold someone prescribes, you can forge your own path. You don’t have to do what is expected, you can create your own expectations for yourself. All my friend needs to do is decide what to do with her time. What is her purpose on earth?

I hope this helps you in whatever situation you may find yourself in. Just remember, when things seem their bleakest, all you need to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.
