Hi!

Welcome to my life. I share stories about my adventures in travel and food. Enjoy!

Where to Travel in May

Where to Travel in May

May is one of my favorite months because it contains my birthday and anniversary. There are many places to visit around the world in May, but here are a few of the best destinations for your next trip.

Europe

Riga, Latvia: Latvia is a small Baltic country with Riga as its capital and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the Baltic. The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and also the WiFi capital of Europe, with over 1000 places to connect to free WiFi. Riga truly blends old and new. In the theme of blending traditions, there’s both a strong Nordic influence as well as German, particularly in the cuisine of Riga. Riga is a fantastic day trip from other areas and also makes a great long layover destination.

North America

Barbados, Caribbean Islands: Barbados lies in the southern part of the Caribbean Islands. May is one of the best times to visit because the temperatures are still relatively comfortable and tourism is at its lowest point of the year. Hotel prices drop dramatically and as hurricane season approaches, flights decrease too. Luckily, the risk for hurricanes is fairly low in May and even in early June. There are also several festivals going on throughout May, including a very popular reggae fest. Barbados is a wonderful place to relax and get away from the world for a bit.

South America

Peru: Peru is most famously known for Machu Picchu… and Peruvian style rotisserie chicken. However, in May, you’ll want to take the time and visit Peru. Whether it’s Lake Titicaca, Machu Picchu, or if you just want to hang out in Lima, Peru is a fantastic place to spend some time. Because of its location in the Andes, it takes a long time to get around. Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to take in this amazing country. Peru is also the beginning of the Amazon Rainforest. After spending time with nature, be sure to enjoy the city of Cusco. Cusco has many beautiful markets and offers a bit of comfort after the more rugged areas of the country. Lastly, be sure to find an aerial tour of the Nazca lines and see if you begin believing those theories in Ancient Aliens.

Africa

Zimbabwe: Why should you visit Zimbabwe? Victoria Falls. These falls are the most spectacular on the continent, and possibly in the world. By foot, it’s said the views are best on the Zimbabwe side, but you can see amazing views from both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Once you’ve seen Victoria Falls, you should spend time on safari. Zimbabwe is one of the best places for big game safaris where you can see lions, elephants, giraffes, leopards, zebras, and more. Additionally, there are several national parks and reserves with excellent walks, picturesque landscapes, and of course, wildlife.

Asia

Bhutan/Nepal: These two small countries in the Himalayas are number one on my bucket list. May is the ideal month to visit as it’s the warmest and driest. Surprisingly, it can reach nearly 80F in May, but with low humidity, you can still make the trek to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. The majority of Mt. Everest climbs happen in May as it’s the most favorable month. While visiting Kathmandu, Nepal and Paro, Bhutan might be the easiest destinations to visit, it’s important to spend the time and see the more remote parts of the countries. Bhutan is very expensive to visit, and quite complicated. Be sure to go through a government-approved travel agent to gain entry into Bhutan. If you don’t want to go through the hassle, Nepal is a backpackers paradise and will welcome you with open arms. No matter what you choose, you won’t be disappointed in this unique destination.

South Pacific

Tonga: Tonga is a tiny island nation in the South Pacific. This destination is similar to what you see of Fiji or Tahiti, but less popular for tourism. Whether you want a spectacular beach vacation, delicious Polynesian food, adventure sports, or water activities, there’s no shortage of things to do in Tonga. Only 40 of 176 islands are inhabited and these islands are known as The Friendly Islands. The vibe is laid back and casual, and many local establishments are closed on Sundays. After all, you’re living the island life, which is slower and more relaxed than nearly any other place on earth.

I hope you find a new and exciting destination for your next May trip. Personally, I’m shooting for Nepal and Bhutan in 2019. Where do you want to visit?
